Integrated Lighting

As we‘re already halfway through 2023, the world of lighting design is experiencing a transformative shift, steering away from traditional standalone fixtures and towards integrated lighting. This trend sees lighting merging seamlessly with architectural and interior design, becoming an intrinsic part of the aesthetics and functionality of living spaces.

At Radiant Lighting, we've always championed innovative design trends and integrated lighting is no exception. Here, we'll delve into why this trend is illuminating the design world and explore some stunning examples.

What is Integrated Lighting?

Integrated lighting, at its core, involves incorporating lighting fixtures into the fabric of a building's design. Instead of being an afterthought or merely a functional necessity, lighting is considered in the early stages of design. The result? A harmonious blend of architecture and light that creates a beautiful, functional, and often dramatic space.

Integrated lighting aims to merge form and function in a way that enhances both the practical and aesthetic aspects of a room. It presents an opportunity to highlight architectural elements, create varying moods, and improve task functionality. By strategically placing light sources, integrated lighting can make spaces appear larger, highlight art or focal features, and provide task lighting where needed.

Some Examples

Cove Lighting

A subtle yet effective way to use integrated lighting is by incorporating it into coves or recesses in ceilings or walls. This indirect lighting strategy casts light upwards towards the ceiling or down the wall, creating a soft glow that adds depth and drama to a space.  Generally this is achieved with strip lighting and the Fusion LED strip by Faze offers 480 LED’s per linear metre which avoids the ‘dot’ effect that previous strip lighting caused without a diffuser.

In-Floor Lighting

Integrated lighting isn't just for walls and ceilings. In-floor lights are increasingly popular, especially in outdoor areas, staircases, or hallways. They provide a subtle glow, making the path clear without being overly bright or glaring.  The LuxR Modux steplight range is a great example.

Under-Cabinet Lighting

In the kitchen, under-cabinet lights are a prime example of integrated lighting. They provide targeted light for tasks like cooking or cleaning, without casting shadows that overhead cabinets can create. Plus, they can also serve as subtle night lights.

Backlit Mirrors or Art

This is a popular application in bathrooms and living areas. Backlit mirrors provide a soft, flattering light that's perfect for grooming tasks, while backlit art can create a stunning focal point in a room.
